They're Doing across America What They Performed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape undercover officers. The child matures in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give them your pullover as well.

The evident and clear truth that Christ from scripture calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

So I have been heartened to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
